  • Featured with an article in the April 2011 issue of Mississippi Courts in conjunction with eleven additional original works and reproductions left to the Mississippi Supreme Court in the estates of Lewie and Jane Tanner, giving the Court a total collection of fifteen Alfred Nicols original works and reproductions.

  • International Artist Magazine named an Alfred Nicols landscape as a finalist in their 2010 world wide landscape competition, the only artist from the southeastern United States to become a finalist this particular competition, a full page being devoted to an Alfred Nicols landscape in the Feb/Mar issue of International Artist Magazine.   • In 2008, he completed a 40" x 60" southern landscape painting to be featured in the lobby of the new Inn At Ole Miss.
  • In 2008, he exhibited over 70 works in an exhibit sponsored by the Greater Jackson Arts Alliance.
  • He has been a calendar artist for the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s Candlelighters’ Calendar for eleven annual calendars and was the cover artist for 2010.

  • In 2002, Mississippi Educational Television produced on Mississippi Roads a video retrospective of Nicols long painting career which was featured on all eight Mississippi Educational Television affiliates statewide.
  • Nicols was selected by the Mississippi affiliate of the American Heart Association as their featured artist for 2004.
  • Senator Trent Lott and Senator Roger Wicker have selected Mississippi paintings by Alfred Nicols for their Washington offices.
  • When the Jackson Arts Alliance desired to honor Senator Thad Cochran with a banquet showing appreciation for the senator’s contributions to the arts in this area, an Alfred Nicols southern landscape painting was commissioned for the presentation to Senator Cochran and it is now featured in his Washington office.

Two quotes from the past say a great deal about Alfred Nicols and his southern landscape paintings. In 2004, as part of the 2004 Art for Heart event in Jackson, where he was featured, Alfred Nicols made the following comments:

“Over the past four decades I have painted many different subjects. Somehow I always seem to come back to the Southern landscape, back to the images that haunt me: images of fall fields and meadows following my Dad quail hunting as a boy; of fishing small farm ponds during my college days; of duck hunting cypress brakes and delta marshes; of sailing the reservoir and gulf coast; of canoeing Strong River and Black Creek; of walking the gravel bars and roads of my Copiah County farm. Studies, sketching, and planning usually take me as much or more time as the actual painting process. Always the objective is to simplify and amplify so as to portray the essence of the land in such a way that viewers can apply their own memories and feel a connection to a special time and place of their own.”

In 2002, when interviewed by Mississippi Public Television for their feature on him Nicols said:

“What I try to do with my art is to focus on what I see that is beautiful in this world that the Lord has given us; get it down on canvas; then hope someone else can see and feel what I have.”
